If am right should not the words "any court" be
altered to "Supreme Court of Hongkong?
8. (3) In view of the definition of "director"
in Section 261 of the Ordinance the words "and manager"
are superfluous. Sir W. Rees Davies agrees. The point
will be considered when amending the Ordinance.

I understand it to be probable that an
attempt will be made in the Legislative Council of
Hongkong to make it optional for existing China
companies to continue to keep their registered office
in Hongkong as at present. It is said in Hongkong that
there is a wish on the part of China companies to have
this option. I am told in Shanghai, where these compan-
ies mainly flourish, that it is not so, and I
imagine it is an effort on the part of Hongkong solici-
tors to retain business. I do not agree with the
proposal; one of our objects is to insure that the
books of the Company shall be available where it carries
on business, and we don't want to have to serve notices
and writs on China companies in Hongkong. I told gir
H. May and Sir W. Rees Davies that I thought it essen-
tial that the registered office of a company should be
